I know there's stuff out there like the flash memory, but I don't want to have to upload the file to the slot-2 device every single time I want to play a game. It would be perfect, if it was basically just an R4 for GBA games.

For r4 to play gba games you need a slot 2 expansion/dedicated gba flash card (if latter then you don't need an r4 XD) and ys menu to get it going. YS menu is just the software to get them running to the expansion card-the acekard/edge can do that as they are-r4 can't, thus it needs this extra software to run. Do your research next time.
